Xtrerra Crested Butte, July 27, 2008
After spending just over a week in Copper Mountain, CO, Sage and I headed over to Crested Butte for an Xterra. Crested Butte, is without a doubt one of the coolest places I have been in a long time.  Everyone tools around town on old cruisers, no one seems to lock them up, and the scenary (houses, mountains etc) are phenomenal!  Upon pulling into town Sage showed me the layout of the course and she quickly found all her Xterra friends suiting up for a pre-ride.  At an Xterra, Sage knows everyone and everyone knows Sage.

On race day the lake was cool, but luckily not freezing. Having spent very little time in the water while in CO, I focused on just swimming relaxed, 8000' of altitude forces me to swim like Russ.  Thru the swim I was able to hold off the field, but quickly got passed on the bike...through the climbs, old teammate John Koenig (soon to be wed) passed me up in the rock gardens.  By the time we hit the road coming back to transition, I was sitting in a pack (like Russ usually does) drafting...its legal in Xterra... On the run John dropped out (calf issues - he injuried it while proposing I think) and I chased down one age grouper ahead of me.  In the end, I finished up as the first amateur and got a sweet prize - 2 nights lodging and 2 lift tickets to Crested Butte!  Sage had some tire issues (blew a tire bead, got a tire in transition and then still went out to ride the course - it was THAT nice) and finished up 31st female, not her best but she was still smiling as usual.  Awesome race, great venue, and killer prizes! Hats off to the folks that put this on, Ashley and Tina...we'll be back again!
