The competitive drive must be genetically based, because Katie is a chip off the old block-not that her parents are "old" or anything. Raised in an athletic family, "training" was and still is just a lifestyle. From 1993-2002 Katie competed in numerous inline races ranging from 5K to marathon distances. Throughout high school she competed in swimming, cross-country, and track; the only formal coaching Katie has ever known.
Despite an unsuccessful triathlon debut at the 1995 IronKids, Katie dabbled in sprint triathlons for a few years before getting serious. In 2005 she followed Mom into the monster known as Ironman Arizona, where the addiction took root. Katie finished in 12:29:22, placing 3rd in W18-24. In the following year her training paid dividends with an age group win at Ironman Arizona and a podium finish at the Ironman World Championships. Desiring more speed, Katie stuck to shorter races in 2007, leading to what some might call a breakout year… 2nd place Collegiate Nationals, 1st place Las Palomas Rocky Point Tri, 1st place Tri for the Cure, 1st place Tempe International, 1st place Sahuarita Triathlon, 2nd place W20-24 Age Group Nationals, 3rd place ITU World Championships, 1st place Best of the US, and 1st place SOMA Triathlon.
