Tempe, AZ (Jan 13) - Time to dust off the racing equipment, GU and suffering, it's the 2008 race season. This past weekend, Mike Melley and Brandon Sullivan decided to go out and give the P.F. Chang's Rock N' Roll Half-Marathon a try. Neither could have considered themselves well trained for this event. If fact, they entered the race just hoping to have some fun, get some training miles in and not get injured.
For Brandon, he was also hoping to qualify for the New York City Marathon in November. To do so, he would have to finished somewhere around 1:30. He easily did that, placing 69th Overall, 5th in the 30-34 AG with a finishing time of 1:20:28. After the race Brandon said, "I should not train more often. This was my PR. I actually went about one minute faster than I did in my fastest half." Sullivan's plan was to start out easy, ensure his lingering plantar injury was not going to cause any problems, then try to pick-up the pace towards the end. He raced according to plan. At the 10 mile marker, he was waiting for his lack of preparation to kick in, but it never did. In fact he said he felt so good he was able to open it up a little in the last three miles, going 5:54, 5:50 and 5:47 min/miles at the end. At the finishline he commented, "It was just one of those races when you feel like your running on air and the pain is enjoyable."
Mike put in a great "training run", finishing in 1:31:17, injury free and feeling good. Hopefully this bodes well for both Mike and Brandon as they enter the 2008 season.
