Tucson, AZ (March 16) - The start of another season for me means one thing, another trip down to Tucson.  If anyone hasn't been to Tucson is awhile, don't go!  In ADOT's infinite wisdom they have decided it would be smart to shut down EVERY exit in the Tucson metro area for construction, through 2010.  As a result, I didn't roll into my room until about 9pm that evening.  Gotta love the government.

The race day weather report called for a windy, cold rainstorm blowing in about 10am.  I woke up that morning and walked out of the hotel not paying much attention.  As I got into the parking lot, a huge gust of wind came by and literally blew my bike out of my hands.  Hmmmm . . . . not good!

EVERYONE around me was faster.  I was lapped twice by the racers to each side of me.  I had no idea what was going on.  Could I be this slow now?  What I didn't know until after the race was that the guys around me were part of the Canadian Jr. National Team, who were in Tucson for a training camp.

The bike was windy but the real bad weather held off.  I had my usual average bike.  I passed a few of the good swimmers and got passed by one person.  By the time I got off the bike my hands were so cold that I couldn't get my shoes on.  It took me an extra 30 seconds or so to finally get them secure.

I got out of the run and was able to pass a few of those ahead of me.  The runner who I ran out of T2 with me was able to open a gap that I couldn't close before the finish line.  I ended 13th Overall and 1st in the 30-34 AG with a time of 58:33.  If it were not for all the Elite racers, I would have been 2nd.  Oh well, it's good to race against those that are faster.  Now on to the Desert Triathlon in Palm Springs in April.
